R E D Yam Cakes - Nov. 15 2012
Snape at the Beach

I'll try to put a few up but probably not everyday.  This recipe my mom found many years ago in a newspaper and we all have it every year.  Now I have to go remember how to do tags.

     Cherokee Yam  Cakes

1 c mashed sweet potatoes or yams

2 c sifted flour

1 1/2 tsp sugar

1 1/2 tsp salt

2 1/2 tsp baking powder

1/2 c oil

1/2 c milk

     Directions

1.  Sift flour, baking soda, sugar and salt into a bowl.

2.  Pour oil and milk into a measuring cup (do not stir).

3.  Add to yams and blend well.

4.  Add to flour mixture and mix lightly with fork (until mixture holds together) Turn dough out onto a floured         board and knead until smooth (about 12 kneading strokes).

5.  Roll dough about 1/4" thick and cut into rounds with floured biscuit cutter (or rim of drinking glass) Place       rounds on a baking sheet.

6.  Bake at 425º for 10-20 minutes.

7.  Serve hot, or split when cold and toast.

Earl Scruggs passed away just a month or two after my dad (theme from Beverly Hillbillies, Foggy Mountain Breakdown, half of the duo "Flatt and Scruggs, inventor of the unique 3 finger banjo picking technique). The Earl Scruggs and Friends cd in my car has been there since I got my Honda 7 years ago. Like Carlos Santana in his Supernatural album, every song on that cd was with a different young(er) musician. He never quit growing musically. One of the big regrets of my life was not stopping the night in Knoxville on my way back to Arkansas a few years ago when he was going to perform. I was afraid with my MS that it would be too much walking. (Bangs head on desk). Never let your fears slow you down, folks. You don't want to have regrets.

And now Doc Watson has moved on to serenade my dad. I did get to see him in Spindale, NC with David Holt when I lived in Asheville. It was at a beautiful venue with an appreciative audience. He was in his late 80s then. He had been blind since birth or a young age so he traveled/performed with other musicians. He was a self taught prodigy as so many of the best musicians are. Dan Hall made me some new CDs for the drive back after my dad's funeral and there are a few tracks of Doc's songs amongst the others.

I'm a little sad (envious) tonight but Heaven is sure a better place.

I thought the current meme  (the spacefem.com html color quiz)  looked familiar;  I did it March 10 last year!
Last year I scored as this:

Quiz Result: You are lightcyan

you are lightcyan
#E0FFFF

Your
dominant hues are green and blue. You're smart and you know it, and
want to use your power to help people and relate to others. Even though
you tend to battle with yourself, you solve other people's conflicts
well.
Your saturation level is very low - you have better things
to do than jump headfirst into every little project. You make sure your
actions are going to really accomplish something before you start
because you hate wasting energy making everyone else think you're
working.
Your outlook on life is very bright. You are sunny and
optimistic about life and others find it very encouraging, but remember
to tone it down if you sense irritation.

This year I'm a little different:

Quiz Result: You are lavender

Your
dominant hue is blue, making you a good friend who people love and
trust. You're good in social situations and want to fit in. Just be
careful not to compromise who you are to make them happy.

Your

others may not be able to, and it frustrates you to see them get down on everything.

Remarks for selinabln's Hobbit post, Juniperus' SF/F post
Snape at the Beach

Hi everyone,

I made it to my little town in Colorado in early May and I'm enjoying being back.  But it did snow almost everyday the first month back here.  We have the highest snowpack levels in recorded history.

I am having big problems now with LJ:  I cannot read anything under cuts, any remarks, and I cannot leave any remarks.  So I will leave a couple of remarks this way.

Selinabln, I was all excited about Martin Freeman playing Bilbo!  Yippee!    And when I looked on IMDB at the casting, did y'all notice...
"

Benedict Cumberbatch...

 "
Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch together again!

But as great as they are, Smaug should have been Alan Rickman, I think.

Juniperus, thank you for the wonderful pottery.  My boomslang skin pot is in my living room window for all to see.

The two female authors I have read and bought the most are Andre Norton (aka Alice Mary Norton) and Zenna Henderson.   If your list isn't too big, can you pm it or post it outside of the cut?

Thank you!

On the road again

I will be out of touch, dear friends.for the next week or so while I finish my move back to Colorado from Alaska.  I was trying to leave in time to catch the ferry but it didn't happen.  I'm sorry not to see whales, otters, and critters (oh my) but actually I prefer the drive...well, it's better than thinking: Multiple Sclerosis 1, Gail 0.

I had lots of offers to help but ultimately I had to do the sorting, direct the loading, and rearrange my dear friend's loading efforts.  I kept getting totally exhausted after the least efforts.  It didn't help that I still don't get enuff sleep, even with a CPAP.

A tired MSer is a useless, nonproductive MSer.

I wanted to go to Aeternitas but realized that was just too much.  Sniff.  Waves from the Alaska Highway,

Kudos to my now former roommate for putting up with a week's worth of:  I need another night, Jean.  I'm just too beat to keep loading.

On a positive note, at least the car is loaded and I have made it the first 300 miles to Tok, Alaska.  My mileposts are from one favorite restaurant to the next.  In Tok (pronounced Toke), it's www.fasteddysrestaurant.com/Fast Eddy's.  I had sliders with salad and onion rings.
